Saudi Jets Pound Yemen Rebel Camps, Ground Incursion Possible
Readers Number : 725

05/11/2009 Saudi jets pounded rebel camps inside Yemen Thursday and ground troops could move across the border against them after they killed a Saudi border guard, an informed Saudi source told AFP.

F-15 and Tornado jets have been bombing the positions of the Zaidi rebels near the border with southern Jizan province since Wednesday, the source said. "They've been hit hard and it's ongoing," he told AFP.

"This is not a hit and run, this is a sustained action" that could involve a ground incursion into Yemen to "clean out" the rebel camps in coordination with Yemen authorities, he said.

The assault was launched after a small group of Zaidi fighters entered Saudi territory Tuesday in the rugged Jebel al-Dukhan area and occupied two small frontier villages before being driven out by Saudi troops. "We took back a small piece of territory and hit their camps around Saada" in northwest Yemen, the source said.

The source also said that one and possibly two more Saudis had been killed in the fighting, and that the Saudi government was likely to issue an official statement on the unrest later Thursday.

Earlier Zaidi officials said that Saudi jets "had used phosphorous bombs" on them, but the allegation could not be independently verified.

The Saudi assault comes nearly three months after Yemen government forces launched a campaign on August 11 against the rebels, also known as Huthis, driving them across the mountainous landscape toward the Saudi border.

Hundreds of people have been killed or wounded in the ongoing clashes, and tens of thousands forced to flee their homes, resulting in a humanitarian crisis complicated by a dire shortage of food and other basic necessities.

Arab "Unity" 05/11/2009 22:28:00

Wow. Where is this kind of Arab "unity" or "co-ordination" when fellow Arabs are attacked by outsiders? While israelis attack, kill and oppress fellow Arabs, these "mighty" Arab armed forces are nowhere to be seen. As a matter of fact, I didn't even think Yemen and Saudi Arabia had the ability to even defend much less attack an opposing force. They are ready to show force against fellow Arabs. I cant even begin to understand this. How shameful and disgusting.

How can we condemn Israel on attacking Gaza while fellow Arabs are attacking each other with airplanes and tanks?

When did the Saudi army ever use its forces in order to defend their fellow Muslims? Fighting neighbouring Arabs is ok though right? Its easy to show your muscles on your own Arab people, especially when uncle sam gave you his blessing. What a disgrace. Makka and Madina are occupied by the US and their puppet king and princes.

YEAH RIGHT Ali. That was a good one. the real rebels are the arab puppet regimes that keep arabs backwards and divided. You want the arabs to coordinate against the rebel threats when the biggest threats to Arabs is puppet regimes such as the Saudi regime. Unity you say? Where is this unity and bravery of the saudi army when Muslims are being bombed and killed by their allies (Usa, EU and Israel) in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Somalia? Dont kid yourself even for a second, the only reason why the saudi army is bombing Yemen is because of the saudi regimes OWN INTERESTS, it has nothing to do with saving yemen from anything.

I sense from your comment that you might be under the impression that I somehow support this act by Saudi and Yemen. I do not. I am being sarcastic when I refer to Unity and co-ordinatin in the way they are attacking fellow Arabs. I am condemning this aggression against the Huthis. I just wanted to clear up any misunderstanding. Salaam brother.

Saudia Arabia is worried as their influence in the region is crippling like a slow death. The world is changing and new alliances are being made. Saudis have allways thrown money and tend to buy power, material and freindship through thier corrupt ways. Yemens population and not just the huthis are fedup with yemens governements brutality and unfareness. The people will rise and slowly this will be adomino effect. With so many years of dictatorship and western influence in the region the region itself now is standing in the crossroad. Either they join the moderate camp and give power to thier people like, IRan, Turkey, Iraq, Oman, Labanon, Qatar, ec and fight or the true enemy or contince current polices of hipocracy. WIth America fading so will its allies...

Saudi Arabia = Kingdom of horror. Isent it funny how their royal family-owned media calls for liberation for the iranian women while they are holding their own women hostage? Saudi Arabia rulership is the definition of hypocrisy.
