The Army and security agencies Friday mounted a series of raids in Beirut and the north, arresting more terror suspects, including a would-be suicide bomber, foiling an attempt to carry out a suicide bombing in the country.

Army arrests (archive)“As part of the monitoring of the terrorist groups' activities and the pursuit of their sleeper cells, the General Security arrested Lebanese national Y. D. over intelligence information that he belongs to a terrorist group and was plotting to stage an act of sabotage,” it said in a statement.

“During interrogation, he confessed to belonging to the terrorist al-Nusra Front group and to plotting a bombing with a suicide vest,” it added.

He was referred to the relevant judicial authorities upon the end of interrogation.

Meanwhile, Army commander Gen. Jean Qahwaji vowed Friday to continue the military’s “relentless battle” against terrorism and to strike its cells with an “iron fist” following the double suicide explosions that rocked the southern Beirut suburb of Burj al-Barajneh on Nov. 12, killing 46 people and wounding more than 200 others in the deadliest attack in Lebanon claimed by ISIL.

Dozens of suspects -- including would-be suicide bombers -- were arrested and several suicide vests were seized in recent days as part of the military’s massive nationwide raids.
