The country’s Emergencies Ministry said that planes carrying humanitarian aid for Syria took off from Moscow for the port city of Latakia.

The Ilyushin-62 and Ilyushin-76 planes belonging to the country’s Emergencies Ministry planes are carrying 46 tones of humanitarian aid for the crisis-stricken Syrian civilians, according to the ministry.

The aid consists of electrical equipment, bedding, tents as well as foodstuffs like fish and milk conserves as well as sugar.

The planes can also evacuate any Russians, who are willing to return to Russia on the flight back, a ministry's spokesman said.

Meanwhile the defense ministry said Russia is sending four more warships to the Mediterranean Sea to join an escort ship and smaller vessels that are already on duty in the region.

The ministry said in a statement to Russian news agencies that the ships would be on "military service" but gave no further details.
