Iran Downs US RQ-170, Warns of Aggressive Response to Violations

Iran’s military has shot down an unmanned US Army RQ-170 aerial vehicle in the east of the country. An Iranian informed military official warned that response to such violations would not be limited to Iranian borders.

Iran said it downed Sunday a RQ-170 American Drone that is also known as “the Beast of Kandahar” in the Eastern part of the country, causing a little damage to the aircraft.

The Iranian authorities said they downed and seized the unmanned aircraft after jamming its control signal, a step that raised fears among US officials that Tehran will have access to closely guarded American technology.

ISNA news agency said the Islamic Republic regarded the measure a "violation of airspace" and vowed an aggressive response.

It further quoted an Iranian informed military official as warning that response to such violations would not be limited to Iranian borders.

The RQ-170 is a Low observable American unmanned aerial vehicle which the United States Air Force uses to directly support combatant commander needs for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to locate targets. It was used earlier this year to locate Al-Qaida Chief Osama Bin Laden shortly before the US Air Force stroke his location.
