The Bahraini regime released a top Bahraini opposition leader from prison after more than four years in custody.

The WAAD (National Democratic Action Society) secular group confirmed on its official Twitter account that Ibrahim Sharif was released Friday.Ibrahim Sharif and Sheikh ALi Salman during a pro-democracy rally in March 2011

Bahrain has been rocked by unrest since security forces brutally crushed pro-democracy protests in 2011 demanding reforms, a constitutional monarchy and an elected prime minister.

Sharif was leading WAAD at the time of his arrest in March 2011 and was one of the top leaders in the Feb. 14, 2011 uprising in Pearl Roundabout.

He was sentenced in June 2011 to five years in prison for allegedly "plotting to overthrow Bahrain's 200-year-old monarchy."

Sharif's release comes four days after a Bahrain court sentenced prominent opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman, the secretary General of al-Wefaq group, for four years for allegedly “inciting disobedience and hatred in the kingdom.”
