Yemen armyA number of suspected militants were killed or injured on Sunday in an airstrike believed to be conducted by a U.S. drone on a group hideout in the southern Yemeni province of Abyan, a security official said.

"A drone, believed to be American, shelled an Al-Qaeda site in the Mahfad district, leaving a yet-unknown number of casualties," a security official told media outlets.

Neither Al-Qaeda nor the Yemeni government has commented on the incident thus far.

Sunday's air raid comes within 24 hours after another drone attack in the central Al-Bayda' province left 13 dead, according to a security source.

Though Yemeni troops have regained control of Abyan in June 2012 after it had been seized militants earlier, the group is still largely active in the southern province.

US drones frequently launch attacks on suspected sites in Yemen.

Yemen has been dogged by turmoil since protests erupted in 2011 forced president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after 33 years in office.

In the three years since, authorities have struggled to restore order and security to the southern Arabian country.
