Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar SalehiIranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Tuesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran believes in territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Syria, rejecting any kind of intervention in the Arab state.

During a joint press conference he made with his Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judah in Amman, Salehi called on Syrian opposition to attend a joint meeting with Syrian government to prepare ground for a transitional government.

“Syrian crisis should be resolved through peaceful means with reliance upon the Syrian nation,” he said.

He also noted that the Islamic Republic has undertaken efforts to bring Syrian officials and the opposition to the negotiation table in view of a peaceful solution.

“Syria is now suffering from a dire situation and its consequences put pressure on the shoulders of our friends mainly Jordan,” he stated.

Salehi made it clear that those terrorist groups which have the blood of innocent Syrians on their hands - including the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front- will not be part of the solution.

Salehi said that Iran is ready to back Jordan with financial support to help afford the hefty cost of the Syrian war refugees who sheltered in Jordan.

For his part, the Jordanian minister stated that his country favors a political solution that will involve all elements of the Syrian society and guarantee its national sovereignty and integrity.

Syria was hit by a violent unrest since mid-March 2011, where the Syrian government accuses foreign actors of orchestrating the conflict, by supporting the militant opposition groups with arms and money.
