Annan from Tehran Stresses Peaceful Solution for Syrian Crisis

International Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan stressed finding a peaceful solution for the crisis in Syria, hoping that Iran would be part of this solution which should be brought into effect starting Thursday.

International Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan stressed finding a peaceful solution for the crisis in Syria, hoping that Iran would be part of this solution which should be brought into effect starting Thursday.

In a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi after their meeting Wednesday, Annan welcomed the Islamic Republic’s support to the six-point peace plan on Syria, and called on “all the countries” to cooperate with the Syrian government in order to put an end to the situation there.

“Governments that have influence in Syria had been approached to ensure that all sides in the conflict respect the ceasefire,” Annan clarified, reassuring that “it would be disastrous if rebels fighting the Syrian regime were to be armed, as proposed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar.”

Regarding the “written guarantee” that the Syrian government demanded from the armed groups, Annan stated that he has “received positive answers”.

For his part, Salehi said his country was glad that Annan’s mission called for dialogue in Syria rather than regime change or a military action.

Speaking after Annan, the Iranian foreign minister said that “we told Mr. Annan that as long as the peace plan continues its approach, Iran will support it."

“Any change that is to occur in Syria should be done by the Syrian government," Salehi added, reiterating his support for the reforms proposed by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
