Al-Khawaja was transferred to the prison hospital on April 3 due to deterioration of his health.
His lawyer said on Wednesday that Khawaja’s health has “further deteriorated” to a level that he was “unable to move.”

Bahrainis have been in the recent days staging rallies across the country, voicing support the activist and demanding his release.

In June, Al-Khawaja, who also holds the Danish nationality, was handed down a life sentence for having led an anti-regime protest earlier last year.

Human rights groups have asked the regime to release him on humanitarian grounds.

On Friday, Amnesty International called for the ‘immediate and unconditional release’ of al-Khawaja and other detained activists in the country.
