Charbel NahhasThe page has been folded on resignation of Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas with a political decision by President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Najib Miqati to accept it after receiving a formal letter from Nahhas on his resignation.

Sleiman formally signed on Thursday the decree accepting Nahhas’s resignation.

Nahhas has said that he refused to sign the decree on transportation allowances, which was agreed upon in Baabda between the Economic Committees and the General Workers Union, because it was “illegal for the cabinet to stipulate transportation allowances.”

Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Wednesday accepted Nahhas’ resignation after Energy Minister Gebran Bassil handed over the labor ministers’ notice.

Grand SerailIn remarks to As-Safir newspaper, Miqati said that a “new page” of productive governmental work will be opened as another minister will replace Nahhas and will sign the transportation allowances decree.

And this is what happened after acting Labor Minister Nicolas Fattouch signed the transportation allowances decree on Thursday.

“The only path supposed to be taken today is that of addressing citizens’ demands according to laws and away from pressures and provocations,” Fattouch said after his meeting with Miqati at the Grand Serail.

Fattouch also voiced hope that signing the decree would be “an opportunity” to activate the cabinet’s work and meet the Lebanese people’s demands “after political disputes obstructed governmental work.”
