AL to Discuss Syria Plan at UN

Nabil al-Arabi and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani will depart to New York on Saturday.

Arab League Chief and Qatari Prime Minister are to present an Arab plan for Syria to the United Nations.

Nabil al-Arabi and Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani will depart to New York on Saturday.

"We will hold a meeting with the UN Security Council on Monday to seek ratification of the Arab League decision on Syria," for President Bashar al-Assad to hand power to his deputy, Arabi told reporters  at the league’s Cairo-based headquarters.

Earlier on Tuesday, the pan-Arab body formally requested a meeting with Ban.

The League agreed on Sunday a new proposal that envisages Syrian President Bashar Assad handing power to a deputy and setting up a unity government as a prelude to early parliamentary and presidential elections.
But Damascus rejected the plan, considering it a violation for its sovereignty.
