Several civilians were killed and many others were injured as Yemeni security forces launched shelling attacks on the southwest city of Taiz.

A medical official told Associated Press that seven people were killed and 22 injure, ten of them were seriously wounded.
The medical official spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared government reprisal.

Local residents were targeted in four parts of the town on Tuesday by the government's Republican Guard and special police units.
Locals launched appeals for help but were unable to get the victims to safety, a medical source told the AFP news agency.
"Government forces, from the hills and from security barricades, and from al-Thawra hospital and Freedom Square, they are shelling," a resident in the town, Abdulkader al-Guneid, told the Reuters news agency.

The shelling continued into the night, he said, without giving any information on what sparked the bombardment.

Yemen has been for about eight months braced for protests against the rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh who has been in power for more than 33 years.

Saleh returned to Yemen two weeks ago. He has been in Saudi Arabia for treatment after he was injured in a deadly blast that targeted his presidential palace.
Shortly after his return, violence re-erupted across the country with clashes took place between security forces and tribesmen.
