Iran DM Meets Putin after IRGC Threat of Defending Syria against Any KSA Attack

DehqanAfter a senior Iranian commander threatened of defending Syria against any Saudi-Turkish attack, Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier-General Hussein Dehqan on Tuesday met Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Media reports did not give further details about the meeting.

Dehqan on Tuesday also held talks with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin on issues of mutual interests and the regional and international developments.

The two officials called for expansion of cooperation in all fields including the defense and military areas which are essential to help restore peace, stability and security of the region.

Expansion of cooperation at regional and international level is of prime importance in international campaign against terrorism and Takfiri groups, Dehqan said.

Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili, the commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base, had said his country is prepared to defend Syria’s airspace if Damascus calls for it.

Any military presence in Syria without the approval of Damascus would end in nothing but "defeat.”   

Saudi and Turkey have reiterated their intention to intervene militarily in Syria under the pretext of fighting ISIL terrorists.

The two countries are considered the basic backers of all the terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq as reports tackle their political, financial and military backing since teh inception of the crisis in 2011.
