Iraqi Forces Repel ISIL Offensive in Anbar

Iraqi military forces managed on Tuesday to repel a major three-day offensive by the so-called ’Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) takfir group in the region of Haditha in Anbar province.

Iraq armyIraqi military forces managed on Tuesday to repel a major three-day offensive by the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfir group in the region of Haditha in Anbar province, security sources said Tuesday.

"We have sacrificed 25 martyrs in 72 hours," a tribal commander, Sheikh Abdallah Atallah, said from Haditha, an area that includes a key dam and was occupied by ISIL in 2014.

"The offensive came from three directions," he said, adding that dozens were also wounded.

Moreover, Iraqi security forces also retook control of Barwanah town in Anbar province from ISIL, the country's Ministry of Defense said in a statement late Monday.

This comes just days after Iraqi forces defeated the militant group in Ramadi.

Captain Ziyad al-Nimrawi, Barwanah's police chief, said that Iraqi forces, backed by the US-led international coalition's air force, killed 22 ISIL terrorists and took control of Barwanah.

"Seven pro-government tribal fighters and Iraqi troops were killed and 37 others were injured during the battle," al-Nimrawi added.
