Bassil Discusses Syrian Displacement Issue with Ban Ki-moon in New York

Bassil relayed to Ban the Lebanese Foreign Affairs Ministry’s objection to the phrase "voluntary return" of Syrian refugees in Resolution #2254 adopted by the Security Council on Syria.

Bassil-BanForeign and Expatriates Minister, Gebran Bassil, ended his official visit to New York and returned to Beirut Saturday afternoon, after meeting with United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, with whom he discussed the Syrian refugees' issue.

Bassil relayed to Ban the Lebanese Foreign Affairs Ministry's objection to the phrase "voluntary return" of Syrian refugees in Resolution #2254 adopted by the Security Council on Syria.

Both men also tackled the Lebanese Foreign Ministry's plan, entailing that aids reach hosting countries instead of refugees. The plan also includes boosting Lebanon's economy through creating job opportunities for the Lebanese, and certain jobs for Syrian refugees within sectors that are permissible to them, such as the agricultural field.

Ban, in turn, informed Bassil of his intention to visit Lebanon upcoming March in the company of World Bank President, in order to have a closer look at ways of cooperation and development with Lebanese officials.
