Two Indians and a Saudi policeman were wounded by gunfire in the east of the kingdom, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

A police traffic patrol "came under heavy fire from a farming area" in the Qatif district on Monday evening, the ministry's spokesman said.

The Indians were passers-by, he said, adding that they were in stable condition in hospital.

An official at the Indian embassy did not immediately have details of the incident.
Saudi Arabia has seen several attacks on citizens and security forces. In September, gunmen attacked a police post in Saudi Arabia's Al-Shamli region, killing two civilians and a policeman.

Earlier this year, two policemen were gunned down in Riyadh by an ISIL supporter.

Over the past year, Saudi's Qatif has been targeted by suicide bombings and shootings claimed by the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group.
