Iran’s Larijani Says Discussions with EP President

The Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani described his discussions with the visiting President of the European Parliament (EP) Martin Schultz as “useful and constructive.”

Talking in a joint press conference after their meeting here on Saturday, the Speaker said he discussed bilateral economic cooperation and regional crises with the EP official.

He referred to the long history of relations between Iran and Europe in various areas including economy and said the talks with the 5+1 helped expand the ties even more.

Larijani said he had good conversation with Schultz on ways of expanding bilateral economic cooperation.

President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, arrived in Tehran on Saturday for a single-day visit.

According to the Belgian website (7sur7), his visit aims at strengthening relations between Tehran and the European Parliament (EP).

The visit is taking place four months after the historic agreement between Iran and the P5+1.

This the first visit of the head of a European organization to Iran after the agreement.

Earlier, the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini visited Iran.

Schulz is going to hold talks with President Hassan Rouhani, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

He is also to meet with representatives of the Iranian civil society organizations.

On July 14, Iran and the six world powers reached a comprehensive agreement on nuclear issues and put an end to over ten years of negotiations.

According to the agreement, the UN Security Council's bans on Iran and the unilateral sanctions imposed on Tehran by the US and the European Union will be removed in return for some measures taken by Iran regarding its nuclear program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is due to announce its appraisal of Iran's peaceful nuclear program on December 15.

It is predicted that implementation of the JCPOA will begin at the end of December.
