Iraq securityThe so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group has claimed responsibility for a car-bomb that killed 10 people Monday night in Iraq’s southern Basra province.

Pro-ISIL websites Tuesday published a statement in which the extremist group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack which shook western Basra’s Al-Zubair district.

Jabbar al-Saedi, head of security in Basra province, said that at least 10 people had been killed – and at least 25 injured – when the car-bomb went off in a crowded area.

Basra province is considered a significant commercial hub from which some 80 percent of the country’s oil exports are derived.

Meanwhile, no group has yet declared responsibility for two other car bombings that took place late Monday – in Diyala province and in northern Baghdad – that left more than 40 people dead and scores of others injured.

Iraq, especially capital Baghdad, has been wracked by almost daily violence since June of last year, when ISIL seized the northern city of Mosul – the country’s second largest city – before capturing additional territory in both Iraq and Syria.
