"Overnight, a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip, targeting civilians in southern Israel," a military statement claimed, adding that the rocket fell on open ground near the city of Ashkelon and no injuries were reported.

"In response to this attack, Israel Air Force aircraft targeted terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip."

None of the Palestinian factions in Gaza initially claimed responsibility for the alleged rocket attack on the Zionist entity.

The rocket set off code red sirens in Zikim, parts of Ashkelon city and the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council, earning a response from a Zionist army spokesperson who said the occupation holds Hamas responsible for such incidents.

Hamas security forces said the strikes targeted a training centre for the Islamic movement's military wing at El Bureij refugee camp, in the centre of the strip, and a "communications center" in the north.

There were no casualties, they said in a statement.

The Zionist military launched a 50-day war on the Gaza Strip in mid-2014 that killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians, mostly civilians. While 73 Zionist were killed in the resistance retaliatory attacks, most of them soldiers.
