Egypt Dissolves 14 NGOs for Alleged Brotherhood Links

Egyptian authorities have dissolved 14 non-governmental organizations for alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood group.

Egypt courtEgyptian authorities have dissolved 14 non-governmental organizations for alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood group.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Social Security Minister Ghada Wali said the NGOs had been dissolved following a court ruling that banned the Brotherhood and seized its funds.

In September 2013, an Egyptian court banned the activities of the decades-old Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which former President Mohammad Mursi hails.

The court also ordered the group's dissolution and the confiscation of its offices and funds.

However, Antar Abdullah, the head of the dissolved Bridges Society for Development and Democracy, denied any links to the Brotherhood.

"The NGO neither has nor receives any funds from the Muslim Brotherhood," he said.

He said his NGO might sue the government to reverse the decision.

The Muslim Brotherhood was designated a "terrorist organization" by the Egyptian government in late 2013.

The Brotherhood, for its part, insists that it is committed to peaceful activism to reverse the 2013 ouster of Mursi.
