DehqanIran’s Minister of Defense Brigadier General Hussein Dehqan and his visiting counterpart from Russia Sergey Shoygu highlighted the need for boosting military relations and all-out cooperation on fight against terrorism.

The Russian minister arrived in Tehran Monday night upon an invitation by his Iranian counterpart.

Speaking in a meeting with Shoygu on Tuesday, Dehqan said Tehran and Moscow could have proper military and defense cooperation as two neighboring states which share identical views regarding regional and international developments.

The minister added, in the present juncture, the two capitals can properly work together to materialize the views introduced by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who had once said the powerful Russia and independent Iran are two significant providers of regional and international security.

Dehqan reiterated Tehran’s position on making constant efforts to help regional governments and nation defend their security and stability.

The Iranian minister stressed that regional problems should be solved by regional countries and that any foreign interference would further complicate the situation in the region and add to its crises.

“Reaching a lasting global peace and stability requires a global determination to eradicate terrorism, violence and extremism,” Dehqan stressed.

He noted, “Iran and Russia can confront US expansionism and excessive demands by further activating their strategic potentials now that Washington is pursuing a policy to collapse strategic infrastructure of independent countries.”

The minister further underlined the need for consolidation of solidarity among regional states in order to fight threats of terrorism, extremism and violence.

Dehqan said strengthening political, security and economic structures in the region such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as well as new security schemes would pave the way for overcoming existing crises.

On the sidelines of the meeting the two defense ministers signed an agreement for promotion of Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the field of military and defense activities.

Based on the agreement, Iran and Russia are to improve bilateral relations and the level of their military and defense cooperation to safeguard regional and international peace, security and stability and fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism.

Earlier in the day, the Russian minister paid tribute to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
