Afkham extended condolences to the Palestinian officials and nation and said that the assassination was another example to prove the criminal nature of the Israeli regime.

Ziad Abu Ein, also a leading member of Fatah movement, headed a Palestinian Authority department dealing with Israeli settlements and the Israeli separation barrier.

He was killed by the Israeli assassination group targeting the Palestinian activists earlier on Wednesday in the course of Palestinian demonstrators in northern Ramallah.

Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah were observing three days of mourning over Abu Ein’s killing.

Abu Ein died after Israeli soldiers hit him with the butts of their weapons and their helmets.

The president of the Palestinian national unity government, Mahmud Abbas, condemned "the brutal assault that led to the martyrdom" of Abu Ein, calling it "a barbaric act that cannot be tolerated or accepted."

"We will take the necessary measures after the results of the investigation into the incident," Abbas said.

Tensions have been running high in the past few weeks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (al-Quds) over the desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli troops.
