Sisi Warns: An Independent Kurdistan Is “Catastrophic”

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned on Sunday that a referendum on the independence of Iraq’s Kurdish region would lead to a "catastrophic" break-up of the country.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi warned on Sunday that a referendum on the independence of Iraq's Kurdish region would lead to a "catastrophic" break-up of the country.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi "The referendum that the Kurds are asking for now is in reality no more than the start of a catastrophic division of Iraq into smaller rival states," Egypt's MENA news agency quoted Sisi as telling journalists.

Sisi also said he had warned the United States and Europe about the territorial ambitions of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
"ISIL had a plan to take over Egypt," Sisi said.

"I had warned the United States and Europe from providing any aid to them and told them they will come out of Syria to target Iraq then Jordan then Saudi Arabia."

The president of autonomous Kurdish region, Massoud Barzani, said earlier that the division of Iraq is no longer possible to stop, noting that the United States will not stand against it.

“Kurdistan Parliament is trying to start the procedure for the referendum and I believe that International community including United States won’t be against us,” said Barzani in an interview with German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
