Police clamped down on protests in several cities, firing tear gas at the Islamists who aimed fireworks at the riot police in one incident, police officials said.

One man was killed and three were wounded in the clashes in Fayoum, a city south west of Cairo.

The protests come ahead of the announcement of official results for a constitutional referendum the government billed as an endorsement of Mursi's overthrow in July.

Initial tallies reported by state media suggest the constitution passed by more than 90 percent. Official results will be announced on Saturday.

More than 1,000 people have been killed, and thousands more arrested in a police crackdown on Mursi's supporters since his ouster in July.
