Tens of thousands of Lebanese and Arab Hezbollah supporters gathered Tuesday in the Raya stadium in Beirut's southern suburb to mark the 1st anniversary of the Divine victory. They were all waiting for Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah to appear on dozens of giant screens to renew homage to the resistance as a choice to defend Lebanon against US-Israeli plots and aggressions. When his eminence appeared, enthusiastic flag holders were waving Lebanese and Hezbollah flags as fast as their hearts were beating, particularly when Sayyed Nasrallah saluted the "honorable" masses, as he always like to call them. "Today I address the people of Lebanon and our Arab and Islamic peoples and to all the people of the world, through you and through the southern suburb, to thank the leaders, powers, movements, societies, figures and all those who stood by Lebanon during the Israeli aggression against this country. And I thank all those who offered help to Lebanon to heal the wounds and wipe off tears," Sayyed Nasrallah said. The War And Hezbollah Preparedness In his Tuesday evening address, the third in a series of speeches he has made in recent weeks to mark the August 14 anniversary, Sayyed Nasrallah promised Israel a "big surprise" if it tired to attack Lebanon. "Oh Zionists, if you think of launching an aggression against Lebanon, I won't promise you surprises like those that you have witnessed, but I promise you the grand surprise that could change the destiny of the war and the region," Sayyed Nasrallah said. "If, God forbid, war happens, we must be ready," his eminence added, stressing his remark last month that his group's rockets were capable of hitting any spot in Israel was designed as a deterrent and not to bring on a conflict. "I warn the Israelis and advise them. Here in Lebanon they face a resistance, an army and a nation that reject humiliation. A nation that fights and is ready for sacrifices and will achieve the historic victory, God willing," Sayyed Nasrallah said. "You might say I am exercising a psychological war. This is true yet my psychological war is based on truthful facts and aims at avoiding any war. And by saying this, the resistance and I realize the responsibility we are taking on," he added. His eminence also warned that "any new war on Lebanon will have a high price … I am not looking for war, but I am working on preventing a war," he added. "Readiness for war and preparedness for war is the most important means to prevent war," he said. "The Zionists and Americans are beating the drums of war, God willing there will not be a war. As I have said in previous speeches, we do not want war," Sayyed Nasrallah added. The Objective Of Last Summer's War Hezbollah's chief explained that tyrannical forces have sought to portray last summer's war as one between Israel and forces subservient to Iran and Syria and one aimed against the tribunal of international character to try suspects in the assassination of former Prime Minister martyr Rafik Hariri. "This claim has tumbled in front of the objectives set by Rice and Olmert at the beginning of the war. The whole world knew that the objective of the war was to subjugate Lebanon for the birth of the so called New Middle East, which eventually failed," Sayyed Nasrallah said. The Hezbollah Secretary General also said that the US and Israelis had sought to undermine the resistance's victory because "this victory gave new hope to the Umma and presented a serious alternative to defend lands and countries. This is not a victory for a sect or a religion or a party. When we triumphed in the war, it was a triumph for Lebanon and the Umma, and if we were to be defeated it would have been a defeat to Lebanon and the Umma." Sayyed Nasrallah explained that the New Middle East Project dates back to the early 20th century, when the founder of Zionism, Theodore Hertzl, wrote in 1877 that there should be a commonwealth in the Middle East where the Jewish state will have a leading role. "And in 1907, the British minister of settlements said that the Mediterranean constitutes a danger on the west since it is the link between the east and the west, not to mention the natural resources and riches there…This is when they exploited religion to divide the Arab world into small states," Sayyed Nasrallah said. He added that "today we have foiled the birth of the new Middle East, but this does not mean that they will not continue to make new attempts, this time on religious and sectarian bases." Sayyed Nasrallah said in his speech that the most dangerous objective of the war was the deliberate targeting of Muslim Shiites, destroying their homes, schools and institutions and killing their women and children to punish the resistance society and incite it against Hezbollah and the resistance. He added that this objective was also foiled. Reconstruction On the 14th of August 2006, Sayyed Nasrallah promised those who lost their homes of as soon as possible. "What we offered to our people was not compensation; it was contributions and aids to heal the wounds of those who had lost their homes and businesses. The government ought to pay compensations. It has received more than a billion USD in aids from donor countries, and this money is the right of the afflicted people." The Hezbollah chief added that Hezbollah had so far contributed more than 380 million USD, "and it's all clean and legitimate money, without political conditions." On the first anniversary of the Divine victory, Sayyed Nasrallah criticized the government's slow pace in paying compensation to those afflicted and vowed to launch a new contribution called "rental", which will see Hezbollah paying rentals for up to 12 months until reconstruction of the destroyed house is completed. Politics Sayyed Nasrallah said Hezbollah supported mediation efforts to be undertaken by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in the upcoming week in a bid to reach a solution to the ten-month-old political impasse. "We support a compromise in Lebanon and we warn the Lebanese against attempts undertaken by the United States and some Lebanese politicians to hamper any resolutions to the crisis," he said. Nasrallah was referring to statements made on Saturday by MP Walid Jumblatt, who said that anyone from the February 14 bloc who thinks of reaching a compromise or a settlement with the opposition would be considered a traitor and should be executed "morally and politically." Sayyed Nasrallah renewed his support for the Lebanese Army, saying the US rejected the concept of having a "strong army in Lebanon capable of protecting its land and people before our army stops considering Israel as an enemy." "The resistance along with the army and the courageous people of Lebanon will achieve a victory every time," he said.
